Just one look at Frederiksbjerg School is enough to reveal that this is everything but the ordinary school. As the winner of the Future School and Learning Spaces competition, this school is designed with children's needs in focus. As a safe and inspiring place where children can finally be children, this school celebrates movement, fun, and learning through play.
Story
The combination of modern architecture and innovative learning techniques results in a school that is tailored to the child. Traditional classrooms are replaced with spaces for movement activities. The sense of freedom and the 'movement DNA' reflects in every detail, throughout the entire building. As a result, 900 pupils can learn while running, jumping, and playing hopscotch, it is all allowed at Frederiksbjerg School.
As the creative power behind the furniture, HOLMRIS B8 in collaboration with SMAK architects who designed the interior plan wanted to embrace the world of possibilities. The main entrance designed like giant climbing stairs sets the mood of the whole school. Around this central atrium, the four clusters are built. Each is an educational unit with a focus on health, socializing, and learning.
The power of interior design is in its flexibility and modular shapes. In other words, the furniture can be combined in limitless ways. Thus, the classroom furniture can be merged with the furniture in common areas and another way around.
In the end, this school is not only ideal for moving and physical activity but also it's organized so pupils will be able to learn without distractions. Henning Larsen Architects made an extra effort to create a good acoustic environment - all ceilings are covered with acoustic solutions so noise won't be a problem.
